DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES (HR)
Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)
Job Status: Full Time, Direct Hire,
Onsite/Remote/Hybrid: 100% Onsite
Schedule: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
Location: Kalamazoo, MI
Salary Range: $100k - $125k (includes comprehensive benefit package)
Job Requirements:
- Proven experience as a SENIOR HR LEADER with strong leadership and operational capabilities.
- Demonstrated success in coaching, mentoring, and rebuilding HR teams.
- Experience handling complex employee relations and compliance matters.
- JD or legal background preferred (especially valuable for navigating labor laws and conflict resolution).
- Experience working in mission-driven or community-focused organizations is a plus.
- Familiarity with compensation management across diverse pay bands, including both high-level providers and hourly support staff.
- Passion for equity, inclusion, and serving under-resourced or vulnerable populations.

We are a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to underserved populations in Kalamazoo County. Established in 1971, we've expanded to a network of facilities serving over 70,000 patients annually. We operate multiple clinics throughout Kalamazoo and offer a wide range of integrated healthcare services, including family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, behavioral health, immediate care, dental services, pharmacy services, occupational and physical therapy, case management, health education, and the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program. The center employs an Integrated Care Model, combining medical, dental, and behavioral health services to provide comprehensive care. Job Summary:
The Director of Human Resources will be responsible for cultivating a compliant, community-reflective, and performance-driven workplace culture that supports exceptional patient care and equitable outcomes. We are seeking a leader who can stabilize and rebuild the HR function. This is a critical leadership opportunity for a hands-on, forward-thinking HR professional who can balance high-level strategy with the practical demands of daily operations. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in human resources, change management, and employee engagement, and will be passionate about contributing to the health and well-being of a diverse community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement HR strategies that support clinical operations, community health initiatives, and compliance requirements.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws, HRSA requirements, HIPAA, and OSHA regulations.
- Oversee credentialing and privileging processes for clinical providers.
- Lead recruitment and retention efforts for medical, administrative, and executive talent.
- Oversee compensation and benefits programs, including management of grant-funded salary structures.
- Direct employee relations, investigations, and conflict resolution practices in alignment with labor law and organizational values.
- Support workforce planning, organizational development, and succession planning.
- Support training and development initiatives across all levels of the organization.
- Lead performance management processes, including goal setting, appraisals, and corrective action protocols.
- Collaborate with finance and compliance teams on HR-related audits, reports, and grant management.
Scope of Role:
- Full oversight of the HR Department (7 FTEs) includes the following direct reports: HR Manager, Recruiter, HR Generalist
